Empowering teachers: Training teachers on human rights
School teachers must have knowledge of human rights, especially children's rights, in order to create an inclusive and respectful learning environment where students' rights are protected, helping each of them to develop a sense of dignity and equality.
Our university, with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program, started a series of trainings for school teachers in Tbilisi and Zugdidi. The sessions were held on September 7-12 and involved 47 teachers from four public schools to improve their knowledge of human rights and children's rights.
The training session for teachers was led by experts/trainers of human and child rights and at the same time academic staff of Sabauni - Dimitri Gegenava, Ketevan Bakhtadze, Tamta Tavartkiladze, Tinatin Feikrishvili and Tsisia Okropiridze. The main topics were: human rights, labor rights, anti-discrimination laws, protection of children's rights and protection of personal data.
The teachers found the sessions highly interesting and productive. In their opinion, the knowledge gained will be invaluable when performing a professional role.
"The knowledge acquired at the trainings will be valuable not only for my professional activities, but also because I believe that every person should have a fundamental understanding of laws and rights," said the teacher, Stella Martirosyan, who attended the training.
In order to maximize the level of teacher engagement, a number of different exercises were offered in the training in the form of interactive sessions. During the introduction and discussion of data protection, attendees participated in true/false exercises, engaged in group exercises focusing on children's rights, and discussed four cases of discrimination, which allowed for wide-ranging discussion.
The participant of the training, Miranda Chukhua, noted: "The acquired knowledge allows me to defend myself more confidently and fairly to protect the rights of others."
