International Conference – Media Law
International conference on the topic “Media Law facing new challenges” has been held in 2-5 November in the hotel Tbilisi Mariott, organized by the International Legal Cooperation German Foundation IRZ with the partnership of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani University. The manager of South-Eastern Europe and South Caucasus program of the International Legal Cooperation German Foundation IRZ, Khatuna Manager greeted the guests, together with the heads of the legal and human rights committees of the parliament of Georgia – Anri Okhanashvili and Sophio Kiladze, head and consul of economic and business department of the Federal Republic of Germany in Georgia – Jan Bittner. Major of Saarbrucken and the former director of the media office of Saarland – Uwe Konrat greeted the audience from Saarbrucken. Head of the regulation department of audiovisual media service of Georgian national communication committee Ivane Makharadze greeted the audience and discussed the standard of expression in Georgia and the role of regulating office in it. Former deputy director of the media office of Saarland federal region and head of the council of European media law institute Jorg Okrou (EMR) represented the report about the European Union media regulations in the area of digital inner market. LL.M (Harvard), Professor of Civil Law, International Private Law and Comparative Law, Director of the Media and Communication law institute (IMKR) Hannes Rossler discussed personal rights and freedom of speech in the conflict situations. Associated professor of Sulkhan Saba Orbeliani University and Grigol Robakidze University – Sergi Jorbenadze represented the report about the freedom of expression in social media (in Georgian reality).
The discussion has been held concerning these issues. In the second panel of the conference the scientific researcher of Leibniz Media Institute and the representative of Hans Bredow Institute Amelie Heldit discussed the hate speech in the internet and the obligation of providers in the social networks. The executive director of Georgian journalistic ethics charter – Nata Dzvelishvili provided the information about the problems of media in the digital era. Former deputy director of the media office of Saarland federal region and head of the council of European media law institute Jorg Okrou discussed the issue of fake news and misinformation, as a legal problem. The director of criminal law scientific research institute of Sulkhan-Saba University – Ucha Bakhtadze represented the report about the news concerning crimes and the frames of the freedom of expression in Georgia.
The conference about the important issues of media law has been going on during several days. The students have also participated in the conference.
