Scientific Symposium
On 8-9 June 2021 Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani University hosted the fourth International Scientific Symposium “Catholic Heritage in Georgia” dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth day of famous Georgian composer, Zakaria Paliashvili. Due to covid-19, the event was held in hybrid mode.
Sympozium participants and attendants were welcomed by rector of the University, prof. Vaja Vardidze, founder of the university, Apostolic Administrator of Latin Catholics in Caucasus, Mons. Giusepe Pasotto and Apostolic Nuncio to Georgia and Armenia, Archbishop José Avelino Bettencourt (speech), who talked about the importance of Symposium.
During the symposium, a number of interesting articles and speeches were delivered about the famous Georgian catholics (Shalva Vardidze, Petre Kharischirashvili, Zakaria Paliashvili), also manuscripts of foreign historians and voyager (Hayton of Corycus, Arcangelo Lamberti, Bernardo Maria of Naples). Interesting materials were presented about the Catholic church history in Georgia’s regions (Guria, Racha, Samegrelo). The information about Georgian Capuchin monk Demetre of Tbilisi, died 700 year ago this year, was unknow for many attendances as well.
Symposium was opened by the book’s presentation. Two important books were presented:
- “Zakaria Paliashvili – The Mess” – Mrs. Nini Sanadiradze, general director of Tbilisi “The Union of Museums” presented the book, that was just published
- Our Catholic Ancestors – joint work of Mr. Irakli Javakhishvili, affiliated assistant of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani University, head of BA of International Relations and Mr. Konstantine Akopashvili, secretary of Georgian Catholic Youth Center.
The first symposium was hold in 2017 aiming to promote the work of catholic church in development of Georgian Society.
