The Council of Nicaea: Church Unity and Georgia
In 2025, the Christian world will celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council. For about three centuries, due to unfavorable external reasons, church consciousness was expressed in various historical forms (local councils, synodal correspondence widely circulated among the Church Fathers, etc.).
The first ecumenical council was convened in Nicaea in 325. The council was a new form of expression of the synodal system of the Church, modeled on the apostolic council. Its authentic connection with the synodal consciousness of the Church was never questioned, since in its convocation, organization, and functioning, the criteria of the past synodal tradition were fully observed.
A full and correct assessment of the significant role of the Council of Nicaea remains challenging due to many historical problems caused by the absence of the minutes of the Council sessions and the vagueness of the surviving fragmentary sources.
An international conference entitled "The Council of Nicaea: Church Unity and Georgia" will be dedicated to this memorable date. The conference is multidisciplinary (religion, history, theology, humanitarian and social sciences), and experts in the relevant fields, doctoral students, academic staff, and independent researchers can participate.
